I've been a teacher at Highland for many years. I teach English as a second lanaguage. Some years I also teach French. In my ESL 1 and 2 class, I teach newcomers to this country to speak/understand/write/and read English. In my Trans Lit class, I teach students reading and writing to improve on the English they already know. In the spring every year, my students all take the WIDA test to see how much their English has progressed over the year. This test is all computerized and assesses the students in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Results of this test are used to place students in their English class for the following year. If a student tests high enough on this test, they no longer need to be in my classes. They will be successful in other English classes. In Scottie Time, I teach students to knit. I am an accomplished knitter and the first project my students learn to make is a little dishcloth. After that, they are free to make scarves, hats, or whatever else they want to work on.
